SPOTLIGHT

Open to the dreams

Recommendation: Late Life: The Chien-Ming Wang Story& Father

Chien-Ming Wang, a former Taiwanese player for the New York Yankees, was once the pride of Taiwan. Chen Hsi-Huang is a master puppeteer who is called Taiwan’s national treasure. The directors record the backstage of their lives, and bring inspiration to the audience through Wang and Chen’stireless dedication to their craft.

Dialogue on Youth

Recommendation: Lost Black Cats 35th Squadron& Our Youth in Taiwan

Two documentaries released in 2018 both shed light stories of youth in Taiwan, and together blend visions of social value. The two films show how the two generations, 40 years apart, both are passionate to serve their nation but experience totally different youths across Taiwan, China, and the U.S. The films witness how social values have progressed in Taiwan: from self-sacrifice as the highest honor, to devoted advocacy for civic and human rights.

Reconciliation with compassion

Recommendation:The Silent Teacher& A Journey with Invisible Friends

Through the invisible spirits and the silent teacher, these two documentaries reveal a society with spiritual wealth, nourished by Daoist and Buddhist traditions which are able to reconcile with compassion the loss of death and historical trauma.
